The 4 main ones are France, Germany, Great Britain, and Portugal. Together they controlled most of Africa. Hope this helps
 
The first European settlements in Africa were established by traders. Although merchants generally operated independently, from time to time they called on their home governments for help in dealing with hostile Africans.
