The component that nitrogen-fixing bacteria provide and that plants can absorb is soluble nitrates. Since plants cannot directly use nitrogen gas, it must be converted into its soluble form. Plants cannot do this either, but nitrogen-fixing bacteria can. These bacteria convert nitrogen gas into soluble nitrates, such as ammonium, which plants can absorb.
