Dante is led by Vigil to the gate of hell where Dante is suspicious about entering the place reading the inscription “Abandon all hope you who enter here”, which of course seems intimidating. Vigil at that point advised Dante that leave and abandon all the mistrust and doubts behind, or any fear he might had about the place if he really wish to seek any knowledge or learning from this journey of theirs. Holding hands then both go through the gate into the hell.
