An atom of copper is represented by  ⁶⁵₂₉Cu and to find the number of neutrons:
number of neutrons = 65 - 29 = 36
The mass of an atom is equal to the number of neutrons and protons in the nucleus.
65 represents the mass of Cu and 29 represents the number of protons.
so the number of neutrons is 36.
