Why is it important to have a basic understanding of chemistry in order to understand biological processes?

Because chemistry is what the body is made up of.  It explains the elements in the system and how each effects the biological processes.  Chemistry and biology go hand-in-hand because there are tons of chemical reactions and chemistry components within the body.
