Southern states feared the outlawing of slavery because they depended on slave labor. The south had slaves doing hard labor for them for free. If the slaves were freed they'd either have to start paying them or find other workers to fill there place and pay them. So the South will loose a lot of money they're earning by taking out a portion of it to pay the workers.
