Make the figure into two rectangles
Area of rectangle: L * W

Rectangle 1: L = 3, W = 5
3 * 5 = 15 square feet

Rectangle 2: L = 2, W = 4
2 * 4 = 8 square feet

Add them together
15 + 8 = 23 ft^2
