Distinguishing shades of meaning help you understand tone by allowing you to see how strongly the person who uses the word or how “light” something is described (not like physically light). For instance, if you use the word “thrilled” in comparison to the word “happy” understanding/distinguishing shades of meaning allows you to see that thrilled has a more powerful effect compared to happy.
