The same fossils/rocks found on America's east coast are also found on Africa's West coast, hence the continents were once together --> plate tectonics.
Continent shape: if you were to cut out the continents on a map you could put them together like a puzzle, ex) east coast of South America fits nicely into the West Africa's little "nook" -->plate tectonics.
