In the story, "The Cold Equations" by Tom Godwin, the pilot Barton wanted to save and help the eighteen year old girl, Marilyn, who was considered an EDS stowaway, with her crisis regarding her meeting her brother. However there was a law by the government that the girl should be thrown off the ship or the mission to bring important medical supplies would fail and thousands will be killed.
