Ibn Battuta was an Islamic qadi, or judge who traveled throughout Dar-al Islam. He found many things interesting including the way different societies interpreted and adapted the Islamic doctrines differently. For example, on a visit to Africa, in a village where the majority of the population was Muslim, Battuta observed Muslim women interacting with men who were not their husbands or family members. He found this savage and unholy as it did not fit with the way his people practiced Islam.
