If the coefficient of x^2 is positive it opens upwards. Negative coefficient of x^2  downwards

The standard form of a parabola is y=ax²+bx+c, 
If the coefficient "a" is positive (a>0) the parabola is open up
and if a<0 (negative) it opens down
